After many years of having the “tax day” creep up on me, I have finally found a few great guidelines to handling the last minute rush.
1) GATHER THE FORMS YOU NEED. You can get them off the Internet at http://www.irs.gov/formspubs/index.html. Or you can go to the post office or, if you are using Turbo Tax, the forms are supplied with the program.
2) GET ALL YOUR PAPERWORK TOGETHER IN ADVANCE. This includes W-2 and 1099 forms. If you have not received them by January 31, call your company. Don’t forget to save a copy for your files. Read the rest of this entry »

What would you do if you owned a landscaping business with the upcoming facts and circumstances? I will tell what I would do.
While having a quiet night out at a local restaurant, listening to music from a local band, I am approached by a friend that has just started a landscaping business. His first question to me is how he should go about making quarterly estimated tax payments to cover both income tax expense and social security tax (SE tax). My response to him was; “hold on there young fellow. Let’s have a discussion of the facts and circumstances before we begin”. Read the rest of this entry »

Being self employed and your own boss also give you the freedom of not bound to a withholding money for tax by a company employer, like you would if you worked for someone else. So what is great about that is you can then put that tax money in a savings account and make a tiny percentage of interest till then. Read the rest of this entry »
